Snow at last in London, and many of us had a great time playing in the frozen lands. Here is a video of a short walk during the time we had off school (when it was closed due to the bad weather). You will recognise a few of the places!

Lots of fun on our residential journey to Hindleap Warren, deep in the East Sussex countryside. Year 6 stayed there for 5 days - enjoy the video of some of the events!

Year 6 had an amazing time away on school journey - this is a glimpse at a few things they did...

Riversdale held a Pakistan Day on 19th October 2010. All the different classes took part in activities about Pakistan.

Year 6 took part in experiencing how people felt in Pakistan and India when India was partitioned and Pakistan was created in 1947. They also did an activity where they picked traditional Asian sweets and then wrote an advert for it.

Lots of people, both children and staff, had a henna pattern painted on their hands, (for a 20p donation towards the flood relief fund) and everyone could wear Pakistani clothes or wear green and white if they wanted!

I have been exploring a great presentation tool - here is a Prezi I just made, all about Radiowaves! Just press the arrow key to be taken around my presentation......Why don't you try making one....:)

To raise money to pay for a 'new brain' that would help us continue our good work on Radiowaves (our school networking site), Year 6 had a grand car wash event!

During one school afternoon, Year 6 had a totally great time getting rather damp, whilst cleaning cars in the staff car park at school. They cleaned and cleaned (I heard tell that Davids car was the dirtiest, and all the kids reckoned he should pay double!).

Well done for everyone for taking part, and thank you to the staff who trusted us to wash your cars!

Everyone who took part, would love to hear from you all about what it was like for you! And which was the dirtiest car that YOU cleaned???

Every year Year 6 enjoy a guided whistle top coach tour around London. Click here to see a slideshow of our visit - can you recognise the places we went to?

Year 4 visit to the Wetland Centre

Click to play this Smilebox slideshow: Wetland Centre visit

As Year 4 have been learning all about habitats, they visited the Wetland Centre at Barnes, travelling there by coach. Arriving early, before it got very busy, they had an opportunity to look around the shop. Next, they had a great time walking round and looking at the many variety's of birds, insects and plants in the extensive Wetland Centre grounds.

After lunch it was pond dipping! Organised into 6 groups everyone took it in turns to use big nets to find different creatures living in one of the large ponds, (making sure they washed their hands after touching the pond water). After finishing they went inside to have a closer look at some of their many finds under a microscope. The microscope was attached to a computer making it possible see the creatures swimming around. It was very interesting and great fun.

Before leaving, it was playtime in the ‘explore’ adventure playground where everyone could swing, climb and run, (and get a little bit wet!). Then it was time to climb back on the coach and return to school.

Everyone had a fantastic day and learnt a lot from the kind and helpful staff at the Wetland Centre. As you can see from the photographs it is a very beautiful place to visit...........

As you might know, several of the staff at Riversdale enjoy football. Here is a sneak preview of a few of them practising their skills!

Year 3 paid a very interesting visit to The British Museum to learn all about The Romans and The Aztecs. They travelled by underground from Southfields to Russell Square and then walked to the museum. When they arrived at the museum they put their lunch boxes in a large cupboard and then wfound their way through the museum and upstairs to where the Roman artefacts were on show. They made sketches of some of the things in the glass cabinets including glass bowls, jewellery, statues and coins - there were some really beautiful interesting things....

The room with The Aztec artefacts in was downstairs so they walked through the museum again to find them. The room was quite dark so sketching was a bit tricky, but everyone mangaged!

Before leaving the museum there was time to go into the shop. Some bought replica Roman soldiers, others bought pens and pencils. After collecting their lunches it was time to leave the museum and go into the lovely park to eat their yummy lunches, then it was back to the station to return to school......

In The Early Years we have been learning about mini beasts, so we went to visit The Tropical Zoo at Syon Park to see if we could learn more. We travelled by coach to Syon Park. On arriving at the zoo we went into a room where we could look at and hold 2 stick insects, a cockroach, a millipede, a tarantula and two lizards. They were amazing. The millipede had LOTS of legs! The spider was enormously huge. The ladies who showed them to us were very kind and answered lots of our questions.
We had lunch on the grass outside the zoo. After lunch we had time to run around before we went back inside to look at the fish, turtles, snakes and other fascinating animals in the zoo. Some of the fish we saw were huge. Most of the animals we saw come from countries with a tropical climate so it was very hot inside.

When we had finished, the coach was waiting to take us back to school. We were all very tired (some of us fell asleep on the coach!) because it had been a very exciting and special day for everyone.
Enjoy the wonderful beasties!

Meeting the Mayor of Wandsworth

The Ginger Party, the Sports Party, the Happy Party, the Magic Party, the SuperHeroes Party and the Riverservative Party leaders all visited Wandsworth Town Hall to have a chat with the Mayor of Wandsworth.

She had heard all about our amazing elections in school, and invited us over to sit with her in the 'Mayors Parlour' and chat and have refreshments. We shared party political themes with her, and she told us how much she had enjoyed watching our Youtube video of our election process!

London’s Burning! London’s Burning!

Year 2 have busy learning all about the Great Fire of London. We were interested to know how fire fighting has changed over the years. To find out we invited the Wandsworth Fire Brigade to our school.

It was an exciting start to our week when four fire fighters arrived in their bright red fire truck with the lights flashing. They told us lots of information about their role in the community and then they let us explore the fire truck. We were allowed to sit in the back of the truck and wear their special helmets. They also let us play with the big hoses.

We had a great time and learned lots of information that you can see displayed on our classroom walls. Thank you to the Wandsworth Fire Brigade for taking time out of their busy day to help us learn.

Normally school age children find the election of a new prime minister a boring process. Their television programmes are taken from the schedule and instead are replaced with dry political debate. However, at Riversdale Primary School every child is eagerly participating in the election process.

Each child wrote their own manifesto as to what their policies would be if they were elected Prime Minister.  These ranged from Felicity in Year one stating that she would make sure that everybody who had to go to hospital would have someone to hold their hand, to Cate in year 6 who would personally fill in every pothole in the country.

Children elected an MP for every class and then the hustings were held.  Each MP and their team have produced banners, posters, badges and flyers. Every child will visit the ballot box on Thursday May 6th and cast their vote!
Will it be - the Happy Party, the Sports Party, the Ginger Party, the Riverservatives, the SuperHero Party, the Magic Party.  We wait with debated breath!

Riversdale Year 6 pupils prepare to experience the thrill of a Lion King performance, at a London Theatre. They have already created colourful pictures, written letters and watched 'behind the scenes' DVD's. This is a short trailer in anticipation of their exciting trip.
Thanks go to the school voices of Bernadette and Zunaira....and of course, everyone else at Riversdale!

In ICT students in explore and make their own pop up books. Using a wide range of techniques they create storybooks - here they are shown reading from their books and showing us how they work. Vicki, the year 4 class teacher, and Sandra, the LSA, had great fun with the children as they learnt how to plan their books, and work out how to put together the special mechanisms that are used to make pop up books.

Year 6 storyboarded and filmed this wonderful movie, all about Riversdale.  This was our entry for the Teaching Awards 'Film Your School' competition, which was sent off in time for the deadline of 1st March.
Groups of children went around the school armed with video cameras, their storyboards and their imagination, to film glimpses of life in Riversdale School.

As part of the lovely assembly that Year 3 presented to the school last week, a team of dancers showed us some Bollywood style dancing.  The whole assembly was full of colour and imagination, this is just one small part of it!

On Friday 19th March, Riversdale had a great day supporting Sports Relief. We wore sporty clothes, had crazy hair, and ran a mile.  It was our chance to join thousands of people as we rose to the challenge, and raised cash to change lives, and have a great time too!

A great video of year 6 - learning the 'multiplication dance' ....

All the chidren had such a fun time making these pop up books.  They used many different methods of construction to put them together, and although it was quite hard work at times, they all made fantastic books.  We will be making a video, with the children showing you other pages in their books, with a demonstration of how they work!

Yr 5 had a fantastic time making paper mache constructions around a balloon. Sandra Ruffini  took some great photos of them totally engrossed in their project, although it was David (Yr 5 teacher) who stood on his desk to take the arial shots!  Well done everyone - we will create another Smilebox of you when you get to paint them, and we shall enjoy seeing your finished results....

Ola, a teacher at Riversdale Primary School, sings 'We are the World' in aid of Haiti. A London primary school, Riversdale is a place where you feel valued and respected - its a place to develop responsibility, respect and confidence. A place where you are heard, and treated as an individual - a place to be safe and to grow. Riversdale.

The video was filmed at Riversdale School, with the beautiful singing voice of Ola, with filming and editing by Wendy Elf. Thank you Margaret for holding the music sheet!

Riversdale School have raised over £850 in aid of Haiti so far, by holding various fundraising events throughout the school. Check out our website for more details:

Year 2 shared some of their excellent work with us in our good work assembly on Friday morning. They have compiled a book on Africa - every child had a different letter. Here is a lovely Smilebox presentation of their hard work.

Year 6 have their own set of blog pages now - an interesting interactive site for the whole class to get involved with. Amy (year 6 teacher) often posts questions to the class (one of them being 'tell us one fascinating fact about yourself'), and the children can comment online.  We hid the names of the commenteers and had a great time guessing which fascinating fact belonged to who!

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.  This is a Wordle of our Ofsted letter to parents. Click on the image to be taken to a larger version that can be printed out, or enjoy making your own Wordle...

We have been exploring more new software this week. Flixtime.com offers a great (free) way of combining word, images, and video, into a neatly packaged entertaining presentation. In ICT lessons, year 6 explored various ways they could use Flixtime - many of them enjoying it so much they rushed home and made some more!

We will be enjoying using this in future projects, as it is a great way of presenting our work throughout the variety of different topic subjects we will be covering in the curriculum.

48 out of 48 correct answers!

We were delighted to find out that someone managed to remember ALL of the capital cities that the children set out to memorise.  As part of our sponsorship challenge day, to help the children of Haiti, some of KS2 took on the task of learning to recognize the flags from many different countries and others the city challenge.  One child in Year 6 had obviously spent many hours memorising the city names.  Well done!

Some lovely new Fisher Price childrens cameras have been bought for Reception. These have proved to be a very popular addition to the Early Years, and the children have been able to take photographs from their own unique viewpoint!  We shall enjoy sharing their pictures with you - here are just a few of the first batch. There is a rota system whereby all the children will have a turn at using the cameras.  Well done you fledgling photographers!
